How to stay healthy while traveling

July 8, 2017

I love to travel. Whether it’s for work or for fun, I really enjoy experiencing new places. Lately I have been traveling more for work than for fun, and I can’t complain! However with early mornings, late nights, and eating out for every meal.. it can be tough to stay healthy. And since I will be traveling for work this upcoming week, I thought I’d share some of my tips for how to stay healthy while traveling:

Stay hydrated

Ok anyone who knows me will laugh when they read this, because  I am THE WORST at drinking water. But it’s so important to stay hydrated when traveling!! The low humidity onboard planes can really dehydrate you, and that can affect your skin, hair, energy.. no thank you! It is also so easy to forget about drinking water when you are not in your normal environment. Bring a reusable water bottle with you and you’ll be more likely to sip on it throughout the day. This will also help keep you from mindless snacking or overeating during your trip.

Bring healthy snacks

Coming from the pro snackaholic herself, this tip should not be a surprise to anyone as this also applies to my every day life ; )  Whether you make your own snacks or pack your store bought favorites, healthy snacks will be your best friend while traveling. Not only will they prevent you from reaching for (or impulse buying) junk food when you get hungry, but they will give you the energy that you need while traveling without the sugar crash that comes from the processed stuff. Some of my favorite snacks for traveling are: almonds, trail mix, granola bars, and no bake energy bites (I’ll post a recipe for these soon!)

Stay Active

This one can be a challenge especially while traveling for work, but it’s important to stay as active as possible when you can. If there’s a gym in your hotel, try to use it! Even 20-30 minutes of exercise will make a difference. If you don’t have access to a gym, there are tons of workouts you can do right in your hotel room. A little exercise in the morning will give you more energy and keep you from feeling sluggish during the day (not to mention, burn the extra calories you’re eating) Comment below if you’d be interested in another blog post on my favorite hotel workouts!

Make good food choices

It perfectly ok to indulge in food (and drinks) while you’re traveling. You’re not going to find me on vacation or at a work dinner eating nothing but salads. Just be mindful of what you are putting into your body. Try to avoid fried foods, fast foods, and soda if possible. No one feels good after eating greasy food and drinking chemicals for days at a time. And no matter what you do, do not skip breakfast! This is my number one rule. Eating a nutritious breakfast will kick start your metabolism and fuel your body for the day ahead.

Sleep

Sleep is so important for your health – It is the time when your mind and body recharge from the previous day. Traveling can really take a toll on your body, so it is very important to make sure you are getting enough sleep when you are on the road. Getting enough sleep will help prevent fatigue, bloating, moodiness, and it will help with overall brain functionality.

Does anyone have fun travel plans coming up?! It’s been way too long since I have been on a vacation – I think I need to start planning my next trip! Let me know some of your favorite destinations I should check out!!
